In the mid-1920s, string basses began to take over the bass parts from tubas because they recorded better.
According to Steven Lasker, Henry "Bass" Edwards was Ellington's tubist from mid 1925 until spring 1926, when Mack Shaw took over.

In March 1927, The Washingtonians lost its Club Kentucky gig.

In June, the band switched to string bass and Wellman Braud, who played both sousaphone and string bass, became the band's bassist.

Harry Carney, aged 17, joined the band on (a href=http://depanorama.net/dems/04dems1d.htm target=_blank>June 26, 1927 and stayed for the rest of his life. He died in 1974, a few months after Ellington.

From what I've been able to make out at http://www.swingtime.de, the Odeon label was introduced in Nazi Germany in 1938, playing Anglo-American hot and sweet jazz from OKeh and Parlophone recordings made from 1927 - 1935. The "ODEON SWING MUSIC SERIES" is identical with some British "PARLOPHONE FIRST NEW RHYTHM STYLE SERIES" and "PARLOPHONE SECOND NEW RHYTHM STYLE SERIES." With the recent modern masters, it reaches some recordings of "PARLOPHONE 1934 RHYTHM STYLE SERIES".

The Swiss series was numbered B 35 000, the Italian series, on heavier records with poorer sound quality, were number A 2300, and the German editions used a fancier font for the titles and catalogue numbers, and were numbered in the A 286000 series.

The first Cotton Club engagement begins
**** ****

Martin Williams: Form Beyond Form (see The Duke Ellington Reader, pp.403-404) writes:
"Late 1927 saw a crucial event in Ellington's career...(the Cotton Club) meant steady work and keeping the orchestra together... Most importantly it meant playing the Club's shows, its miniature revues. In working on these shows; in preparing overtures, chorus dances, accompaniments to specialty dances, 'production' numbers; in working with featured singers and contributing some of their songs; in preparing musical transitions and 'filler,' Ellington began to discover what kind of music he was to make, and he began his singular expansion of the orchestral language. Ellington took the idiom that Miley represented, took what he had learned from Redman and Henderson, took his own innate urbanity, and in effect started all over again with a new approach to the large ensemble...Ellington now made his big band over by making it also a show band, a theater orchestra."

The origins of the Cotton Club itself are outlined here.
