| Braggin' in Brass Brunswick m8099 Matrix m773-1 Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra New Desor DE3805c Recorded Mar. 3, 1938 ARC-Brunswick (Master) recording session, New York City There is some incredible sectional work in this piece. I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart is a slow, gentle, sweet recording, but Braggin' in Brass is a rip-snortin' brass showpiece, a real barn burner. I wonder if Ellington planned the recordings in this order deliberately, to achieve the same effect as described by Eddie Lambert at page 65 of his Duke Ellington A Listener's Guide, where he cites a story by Barney Bigard about the way Ellington handled his musicians: The first time Ellington met the Lunceford band in a battle of music, Lunceford led off with a string of Ellington compositions, plus their score of Rose Room, a feature for Willie Smith on clarinet which was clearly based on the recorded Ellington arrangement. When the Ellington band's turn to play came the leader persisted in calling slow, quiet numbers which made little impact on the audience. The band became increasingly angry at this policy and its effect until Cootie Williams shouted "For crying out loud, play something!" whereupon Duke turned his musicians loose - their blood well up - on St. Louis Blues and Tiger Rag. That was the end of the Lunceford challenge for that night." Listen on http://www.jazz-on-line.com, courtesy of Michel Essevaz-Roulet |
