Duke Ellington - The Private Collection

Duke Ellington made many recordings which were never released during his lifetime. His son Mercer donated this "Stockpile" to Danish Radio, and new releases are eagerly awaited. The Private Collection is a ten CD set of these recordings.

When cataloguing my incomplete set, which was primarily a Canadian release, I discovered my volume numbers did not agree with the discs already indexed by Marcus Girvan, produced in the UK.
My set was issued on the Canadian label Unidisc and Marcus' set was produced by the English Kaz Jazz Masters label.
Sjef Hoefsmit of Duke Ellington Music Society has provided a reconciliation of the sets from Germany ("WEA"), the USA ("Saja"),Japan ("WEA") and the UK ("Kaz"):

When I ordered mine, I was only able to get discs 6 to 10 as a box set, published by the Canadian label Unidisc. I had to order the first five individually, and couldn't get disc 4 (it is now available in Canada at a ridiculous price). It turned out volumes 1, 2, 3, and 5 came from more than label. It appears Unidisc numbered its set AGEK 2032 to AGEK 2040, but these numbers do not appear on the spines, covers or disc faces of discs 6 to 10. The bar code on the back of the Unidisc box set of volumes 6 to 10 is UBX-102-05.

This image table reconciles the Kaz set with what I have. These are low-quality thumbnail images; to see higher resolutions, click on them.

Concluding remarks:

There is little uniformity from label to label, but this isn't much different from records released during the twentieth century.

For this reason, Marcus, Bjorn and I have developed an online catalogue to cross-reference known compact discs with a common numbering system.
